Applying for a UK student visa can feel daunting, but with the right information and preparation, it can be a smooth process. The following step-by-step guide will help you navigate the application process.

Understand the type of visa you need

  • For most students, the Student Route Visa (formerly known as the Tier 4 Visa) is the one to apply for.

  • Check the UK Government website for specific requirements and eligibility.

Prepare your documents

  • Valid passport-  Ensure your passport is valid for the duration of your stay.

  • Confirmation of acceptance for studies (CAS) - This is a unique reference number from your educational institution.

  • Proof of funds -  Evidence that you can support yourself financially during your studies. This usually involves bank statements or a letter from your sponsor.

  • Tuberculosis test results -  If you’re from a country where TB testing is required.

  • Academic certificates and transcripts -  Relevant to your course of study.

  • English language proficiency: Proof that you meet the English language requirements.

Online application

  • Fill out the visa application form online. Double-check all information for accuracy.

Pay the fees

  • Application fee - This varies depending on your location.

  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) - This fee provides access to the UK's National Health Service (NHS).

Book an appointment

  • Schedule an appointment at a visa application centre to provide your biometric information (fingerprints and photograph).

Attend the appointment

  • Bring all your required documents.

  • Be prepared to answer questions about your study plans and financial situation.

Await decision

  • Processing times can vary, so apply well in advance of your course start date. You can track your application status online.

Receive your visa

If your Student visa application is successful, you will receive an eVisa, a secure digital record of your immigration status, instead of a visa sticker in your passport. You will be able to access it through your UKVI account and use it to travel to the UK and prove your right to study and stay.

Prepare for arrival

  • Ensure you have all necessary documents and a copy of your CAS letter.

  • Plan your accommodation and travel arrangements.
